Chef Shinichi does it again, but even better this time. On a Thursday night, this place was packed and filled with liveliness. The enthusiastic staff and Chef Shinici's hospitality only enhanced the overall experience. The menu changes every month or so I believe, making each visit unique, memorable and dynamic. The two gentleman sitting next to us indulging on multiple bottles of sake while drinking with the Chef, made the experience that much more personable. What makes Sushi Azabu a very different experience from other restaurants in Manhattan is the diversity in not only fish, but style of preparation. The omakase includes, sashimi, nigri, hot appetizers and dessert. It's not just about the food but the whole experience and delightful atmosphere. For this caliber of sushi, quantity of food, intimacy, entertainment, hospitality and $120/per person, Azabu has found its way to the top of my list.
The runner up piece. Chef Shinici believes this is probably the most delicious fish in Japan, the nodoguro. Lightly seared topped with a special salt based sauce that explodes with spiciness in your mouth. This piece was unbelievable
What a nice way to end the 3 hour spectacular with home made tea infused pudding. A very not so very sweet end, just the way I like it.
The O.M.G - as Sinichi would call it. Slightly seared otoro with a hint of salt. It was the best piece and absolutely delicious. The melt in your mouth kind of good. The soft, sweet yet savory flavor was everything I needed.
The uni hits the spot every time. I can't even describe the texture or flavor. I guess the closest might be a sorbet? The creamy and milky texture accentuates its natural sweetness yet it's in fact a savory piece.
Ambiance
The restaurant is very small and located in the basement of another Japanese restaurant. The omakase counter consists of eight seats and two or three table seatings in the back. It has a very authentic feel with wooden furniture and decor.
Price
The tasting menu starts at $120 per person which is more than enough in my opinion. They recently started doing upgrades of $150 and $180, I believe. But I think for this caliber of sushi and quantity, $120 is a steal compared to other top restaurants.
Reservation
I love this place because it's still relatively low key and not many people know of it. Reservations are not difficult to get at all. I would recommend a week before at the least to be safe. But I've made reservations the day before and got exactly what I wanted. I recommend requesting for the head Chef Shinichi or the old man that looks like Jiro.
